The Craft War

The EtsyBlogger blog carnival has an interesting theme this week. Art vs. Craft - is it really an issue?

Well, for me, I think it might just be semantics. Art is usually thought of as paintings or sculpture. Go to any art gallery and there is "art". But art also refers to one's "art" -a trained, and learned practice. So this can apply to nearly anything.

Craft, on the other hand, is often referred to as crafts - such as kids' craft classes and popsicle art. But "craft" can also mean a trained and learned practice.

So it all depends on to what and who someone is referring. It's subjective. However, each field has designated certain thresholds for what is art, because art is more subjective, and craft is more practical.

So yes, it's an issue if someone is calling comething art when it is a practical household item with no subjective nature or an original oil painting craft - but for the most part the terms can be interchangeable and are themselves subjective to the field (for example, metalsmiths likely have certain thresholds that separate craft from art, with a blurry line - and it takes training and experience to be a craftsman as opposed to hobbyist...another terminology issue).

My answer is always "it depends", because there are so many grey areas in life.

Good analogy. I see myself more crafty than artistic, mostly because I can't draw or paint! But there are elements of art in my items, titles, colors, etc. You are a crafty artist yourself!
